[06:17]<Quantos2> Hey guys
[06:56]<+camerongray> Hey Quantos2
[06:58]<Quantos2> Hey Cam, tip for you, avoid the 14.04 beta
[06:58]<Quantos2> it borked all my drivers
[06:59]<Quantos2> And the nVidia drivers aren't functional for it yet
[06:59]<Quantos2> I've been up all night swearing and pacing
[07:00]<Quantos2> I was going to use my backup box for it, but thought nah, I'll be fine, I'll put it on my main system
[07:00]<Quantos2> Famous last words eh?
[07:01]<Quantos2> So how's your day going?
[07:05]<+camerongray> Ouch!
[07:06]<Quantos2> Fortunately I managed to make it back in so that I could back up my files, in a 640x480 environment
[07:06]<Quantos2> How barbaric
[07:07]<+camerongray> I always keep an SSH server running so I can get in if something like that happens
[07:07]<Quantos2> I just booted from an old kernel and got in that way
[07:07]<Quantos2> Damn lucky I could
[07:07]<+camerongray> Ahh yeah
[07:08]<Quantos2> Woulda sucked loosing all my photos
[07:08]<+camerongray> That's the issue I have - When the kernel updates I need to reinstall the latest graphics driver for it to work
[07:09]<Quantos2> Yeah, it's kind of flaky. The new kernel should be able to say 'Oh, there's the video driver that was being used, it's here already, I might as well use it.'
[07:10]<Quantos2> Now I'm trying the 14.04 with a fresh format in case it was something I did, if that don't work then it's back to 12.04 for a couple of weeks
[07:11]<Quantos2> CARP, I forgot to back up my favorites, oh well
[07:17]<Quantos2> Nope, wasn't something I did, same thing on a fresh install, back to 12.04
[07:17]<+camerongray> Hmm
[07:19]<Quantos2> Yeah, that was my thought too
[07:19]<Quantos2> At least Linux installs and updates faster than windows
[07:19]<+camerongray> YEah
[07:20]<+camerongray> If you can't get any NVIDIA drivers working - May be worth grabbing a cheap newer card like a GeForce 610
[07:20]<Quantos2> What PSU wattage does that one require?
[07:21]<+camerongray> Pretty much nothing - The card pulls 29w
[07:21]<Quantos2> Cool, I could still run that on my beefy little 280W
[07:21]<Quantos2> ;)
[07:21]<+camerongray> Yeah
[07:21]<+camerongray> If it came with the machine it will probably be a good unit though
[07:22]<Quantos2> It's a solid PSU, just not much grunt
[07:22]<+camerongray> Yeah
[07:22]<+camerongray> Thing is, a cheap "500w" unit would probably cope with less
[07:22]<Quantos2> The original died, so I pulled this one out of my other box
[07:23]<+camerongray> I have to laugh when people critisise Dell for using low wattage PSUs and then replace them with low end, high wattage ones
[07:23]<Quantos2> I have to agree there
[07:23]<+camerongray> They don't realise that Dell use really solid PSUs that could probably output more than the junk unit they are putting in
[07:23]<Quantos2> Yeap
[07:24]<Quantos2> I hate the language packs, what on earth do I need cyrillic for
[07:24]<+camerongray> haha yeah
[07:24]<Quantos2> I can't read it, might as well be little boxes
[07:25]<Quantos2> Or wingdings

[12:00]<+camerongray> :D
[12:00]<@BC_Programming> yeah for some reason "deliver weekday" was a special instruction, just noticed it on the tracking
[12:00]<@BC_Programming> 'Special Handling instruction' rather

[12:30]<Mulreay> How goes it~?
[12:30]<Mulreay> It's a long it- apparently
[12:52]<Mulreay> Today I will be mostly trying to clone my HDD to the 3tb and have a working drive.
[12:52]<@BC_Programming> good luck
[12:53]<@BC_Programming> Today I will probably be outsmarted by a fedex driver who will put a "we tried to deliver" notice when I'm not looking
[12:58]<Mulreay> brb

[13:58]<Craig> Good luck BC. Those drivers are tricky.
[13:59]<jamer> Craig pc repair :P
[13:59]<@BC_Programming> UPS is okay here as far as I can tell, fedex seems a bit shifty
[13:59]<Craig> :P
[14:00]<Craig> Jamer, what state?

[14:36]<@BC_Programming> no
[14:36]<Quantos> LOL
[14:36]<Quantos> I'm sorry
[14:36]<@BC_Programming> supposed to be here today
[14:36]<Quantos> Well, it's still early yet
[14:36]<@BC_Programming> status changed to "On FedEx vehicle for delivery" this morning
[14:36]<@BC_Programming> apparently "Delivery weekday" was on the special handling
[14:36]<Quantos> Did you look in the bushes?
[14:46]<jamer> too soon ... too soon
[14:47]<@BC_Programming> ?
[14:48]<jamer> the bushes thing

[15:18]<Mulreay> lose*

[17:31]<@BC_Programming> it's here
[17:31]<@BC_Programming> just opening the box
[17:31]<@BC_Programming> it's frikkin huge

[18:01]<@BC_Programming> This monitor is RIDICULOUS
[18:01]<@BC_Programming> like 1000% better than my old one
[18:07]<+camerongray> nice!
[18:08]<jamer> today's been a good day ... start off like shit .... (5 hours sleep)
[18:09]<@BC_Programming> Windows 8 automatically chose the new resolution, apparently it decided it was way to high because it also increased the size of text/DPI
[18:09]<+camerongray> haha
[18:09]<@BC_Programming> which is fine actually
[18:10]<@BC_Programming> Much brighter and more vibrant also, which I expected- my old one looked fine but I think I was used to it
[18:12]<jamer> anyone seen the specs for the new x99 chipset?
[20:02]<@BC_Programming> hmm amazon recruiter
[20:06]<+camerongray> jamer: Yeah, looks really nice
[20:08]<+camerongray> I like the idea of DDR4 but not sure if I'd get that or just wait for the non-enthusiast platform to get it
[20:08]<+camerongray> Suppose it largely comes down to the price
[20:09]<+camerongray> Just grabbed an old Sun Ultra 1 from uni too :D
[20:09]<@BC_Programming> I didn't know Amazon were poachers
[20:09]<+camerongray> Very fun to play with
[20:09]<+camerongray> Finally get it to boot - Debian Sarge (3.1)
[20:10]<+camerongray> And I don't have a suitable keyboard/monitor/mouse (Ordred some though) so currently hooked up via a 9pin -> 25pin Null Modem cable which is in turn going through another cable to change the gender so I can access a serial console
[20:11]<@BC_Programming> is that a mainframe? or just a server
[20:11]<+camerongray> Just a server :P
[20:11]<@BC_Programming> "Just" being a odd choice of words
[20:11]<+camerongray> I'm not THAT bad
[20:11]<+camerongray> Well, not a server - An old workstation
[20:11]<+camerongray> But it was used as a server
[20:11]<@BC_Programming> I had a 386 that used to be a server
[20:11]<@BC_Programming> 40Mhz weeee
[20:11]<+camerongray> haha
[20:12]<@BC_Programming> 33Mhz being the typical speed of a 386
[20:12]<+camerongray> lol
[20:12]<@BC_Programming> 8MB of RAM
[20:13]<@BC_Programming> Actually now that I think about it I did learn Visual Basic with it, Visual Basic 2.0
[20:13]<+camerongray> I win on that one with my 167MHz TI UltraSparc I and 160mb RAM :D
[20:14]<+camerongray> But bearing in mind this is from 1995 - That's mindblowing for the time!
[20:14]<@BC_Programming> nah, mine was slower
[20:14]<+camerongray> The only issue so far - No CD-ROM or Floppy drive fitted (Just blanks)
[20:14]<+camerongray> Therefore, I need to work out how to install solaris over the network!
[20:15]<@BC_Programming> oh dear
[20:15]<@BC_Programming> and I would guess they don't use a standard floppy drive either
[20:15]<+camerongray> "Just put one in" I hear you say - It's entirely SCSI :D
[20:15]<+camerongray> It looks standard floppy connector but there is no space for an eject button so it probably wants a fancy auto eject one
[20:16]<+camerongray> Tempted by this though: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sun-340-3186-ULTRA1-Floppy-CD-ROM-/360708521077?pt=UK_Computing_Other_Computing_Networking&hash=item53fbe73c75
[20:17]<+camerongray> Network installing sounds more fun though
[20:17]<+camerongray> Oh yeah, and it's 64bit
[20:17]<+camerongray> From 1995!
[20:19]<+camerongray> Going to be fun to play with
[20:19]<+camerongray> Oh yeah, it also has a wiki page - http://wiki.tardis.ed.ac.uk/index.php/Mccoy
[20:19]<+camerongray> :P
[20:21]<+camerongray> Need to get the data off of it though to be safe
[20:21]<+camerongray> Think I'll try mounting my server and just copying everything to it

[20:57]<+camerongray> And the connectors from the PSU have been labeled by hand!
